Electric water heater heating failures may involve thermostats, heating elements, or electrical components. Speak directly with a local specialist to discuss your system.
Residential electric storage water heaters feature upper and lower electric resistance heating elements coordinated by matching thermostats. When one component fails, hot water production drops sharply:
The upper element provides initial heating to the top third of the tank. If it burns out, you will experience a complete hot water outage.
If you have hot water that turns lukewarm after just 2 or 3 minutes, the lower element has likely burned out due to sediment immersion or electrical fatigue.
The red Emergency Cutoff (ECO) reset button trips when tank water exceeds 170°F. A faulty thermostat or shorted element usually triggers this safety cutoff.
Mechanical contacts inside the bi-metal thermostats wear over time, preventing electricity from reaching the elements even when water is cold.
